Using the power of sport to help improve the lives of disabled youth in Indonesia!
Improving lives of persons with disabilities in Indonesia by using the power of sport and play for development, health and peace. Through the Team Brunel Abroad platform, we have the opportunity to travel to Bali to complete volunteering work for the Bali Sport Foundation. The foundation provides safe and supportive sports environment which can provide disabled youth with a place in which they are treated with dignity, while they develop new valued skills and form friendships. Myself, along with fellow Brunel students, will be fundraising to support the work of the foundation, by partaking in a two week trip. Along this trip, we will be volunteering in various Bali Sport Foundation projects. Each student will be raising funds to contribute to the cost of the trip, in addition to enable the Team Brunel Abroad project to make a donation to the Bali Sports Foundation to support their future work.
Why I'm getting involved?
Sport changes lives! As an Occupational Therapy Student, I recognise benefits of integrating sporting activities for their therapeutic potential, carrying over skills to improve independence in everyday activities. On a personal level (living with a disability) I value the opportunities disability sport has given me from a social, physical and mental health perspective. I'd love to help give children with disabilities the same opportunity I've had.
What will we do?
While out in Bali we will be volunteering on a number of projects. Firstly, we will help in the Foundation's Para Games. From here we will team up with the Foundation hand cyclists, where we will do a two day cycle trip round Bali. The third and final project we will be helping run is the Bali 4's Wheelchair Rugby. While helping the set up, and running, of this tournament, there will be chance to visit local projects that run alongside the BSF.
Where will the money go?
Approximate funding breakdown:
Costs with flights included - £2050:
- £1000 Charity donation*
- £350 accommodation (bed and breakfast) and group airport transfers
- £600 return flights
- £100 2 day bike ride
*All participating students will be expected to raise a minimum of £1000 above their travel costs, as this will go directly to the foundation.
