We are raising money to engage thousands of Brunel University London students and members of the West London community in physical activity on campus by installing beneficial pieces of new equipment. This would extend on the current outdoor facilities, making them more relevant to the fitness needs of young adults and teenagers, while increasing accessibility to exercise for those who may not be able to afford costly gym memberships.
Who we are
We are a group of enthusiastic Brunel University London students, alumni and members of the public, all keen on outdoor exercise, fitness and well-being.
The current equipment at Brunel on campus is basic and not necessarily suitable for adults and teenagers trying to improve their fitness, and there isn’t a park that is suitable anywhere close! The only alternative is pay hundreds of pounds for a gym membership or go without, but we believe access to free facilities for students is important. There is so much evidence to show how beneficial regular fitness is to overall health and wellbeing, including improved focus and reduced stress.
After realising this problem, we have decided to raise money to install a pull up bar and set of parallel bars. These two additional pieces of equipment are multi-purpose, allowing the capability to do an expansive range of bodyweight exercises – from upper body, to abs and legs. A small investment for many uses!
This equipment will not only better engage students and community members with their fitness this year, but it will remain for the benefit of many others for years to come.
If we exceed our fundraising target we would engage with the community to contribute to our ideas and potentially build one of the most unique parks in West London!
Where will the money go?
Our minimum funding target will enable us to purchase the standard quality of parallel and pull up bars. Our full target will allow us to purchase extremely high standard and durable bars, designed to ensure the most safety when performing all exercises - even those as advanced as what is performed in our accompanying video. Any further funding will be put towards additional new equipment, to provide more variety and enjoyment.
We’ve got one of the UK’s best young calisthenics athletes – Ben G, also from West London – on board with the project.
If you donate £10, you will be eligible to take part in a free workshop at the new park, where Ben will teach or help you improve basic bodyweight exercises and demonstrate a variety of tricks and moves achievable on the bars. If you donate £20 you will be eligible to take part in a free workshop at his home gym, the Brixton Street Gym, where he will run you through sets on parallel bars and pull up bars, through to tyre-flipping, rings, ladders and many more varieties of exercise.
Help us succeed!
If you’re as passionate about engaging people with their health as we are please share this to your network. We’d love to engage more people who are interested in outdoor fitness with this project so we can get it off the ground. You don't need to give money to help us succeed! Please share this project with anyone you think would support us – on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, by email, telephone, in a chat at lunch or on your jog.
